NONGPOH, May 16: The owners and drivers of passenger vehicles in Ri-Bhoi district have raised concerns about the delay in receiving payment for their services during COVID-19 pandemic and the recent general Assembly elections.
Under the umbrella of a Joint Action Committee (JAC) called ‘All Ri-Bhoi Passengers Vehicle’, they have submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi, Arpit Upadhyaya, on Tuesday urging him to expedite the release of their dues.
The JAC, which comprises various associations including those representing taxis, Sumo vehicles, buses, and pick-up trucks, highlighted the significant difficulties faced by the owners and drivers due to the delay in payment.
The JAC has threatened to abstain from participating in any government duty in the future if their demands are not met.
It may be mentioned that during the recent general elections, the district administration of Ri-Bhoi had requisitioned over 400 vehicles, including Sumo vehicles, buses, and pickup trucks, for poll duty. However, the pending bills pertaining to the services have not been disbursed to the owners and drivers leading to their growing frustration and financial hardships.
Following the submission of the memorandum, the JAC leaders shared that they had a meeting with the DC, who, they said, has assured them of releasing the dues within 15 to 20 days.
In addition, he has expressed commitment to examining and following up on the pending bills related to COVID-19 duty in order to expedite their release.
The JAC leaders believe that a prompt resolution of this matter will contribute to maintaining a harmonious relationship between the transport sector and the government administration.
The owners and drivers of passenger vehicles in Ri-Bhoi district have played a crucial role in providing transportation services during the days of pandemic and Assembly elections.
