Shillong, July 13: Tesla has initiated discussions with the Indian government regarding an investment proposal to establish a car manufacturing facility in the country, according to report in Times of India.
The proposed factory would have the capacity to produce up to 500,000 electric vehicles annually. The report also stated that the prices of these electric vehicles would begin at 2 million rupees ($24,400.66).
Tesla had not provided an immediate response to Reuters’ request for comment on the matter. However, the article mentioned that the company, led by billionaire Elon Musk, is considering utilizing India as an export hub to ship cars to countries in the Indo-Pacific region, as per government sources.
During a meeting with Musk last month, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the automaker to make a “significant investment” in India. These discussions highlight Tesla’s interest in expanding its presence in the Indian market and potentially using it as a manufacturing and export base.
