Shillong, July 19: The North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has asked all the colleges affiliated to the university to implement the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 for undergraduate courses from the new academic session which will start from August 1.

Talking to reporters, NEHU vice chancellor, Prabha Shankar Shukla on Wednesday said that the university has already implemented the New Education Policy for the PG course since the academic session of 2022-2023.

“As soon as I assume charge as the VC of the university I had assured that rigorous effort will be taken for implementation of the education policy in the university,” NEHU vice chancellor said.

When asked how he will ensure that the NEP 2020 will be implemented when he is not aware how many colleges will be implemented, he said that he will be conducting a meeting with the principal of the colleges on the steps which need to be taken to implement this policy.

He also clarified that everything has been circulated to the college principals for implementing the policy.

“We are ready to conduct training for the colleges. Our objective was to serve for the better of the students,” Prof Shukla said.

Admitting that the challenges that some colleges might face in implementing the policy immediately, he said that such institutions can defer the implementation for one academic year.

Principals of colleges that are not yet prepared to implement the NEP 2020 are encouraged to reach out to the authorities and provide detailed reasons for their current inability to comply.

It may be mentioned that Education Minister Rakkam Sangma recently had expressed reservations about the state’s preparedness for the implementation of the NEP 2020.

One of the key aspects of the NEP 2020 implementation is the restructuring of undergraduate courses.

As per the new policy, undergraduate programs will now span over four years, and students will have the option of exit points – this means that students can choose to discontinue their studies after the first year, and later rejoin whenever they find it feasible to continue their education.
