Shillong, August 14: The Chief Magistrate’s Court in Colombo restricts ex-cricketer Sachithra Senanayake from leaving the country as investigation into match-fixing charges ensues.
As per IANS, Senanayake is accused of attempting to manipulate matches during the 2020 Lanka Premier League (LPL).
The court’s action follows orders from the Attorney General, who directed the Sports Ministry’s Special Investigation Unit to press criminal charges against the former spinner under the Prevention of Offences related to Sports Act.
This marks a significant case as it is the first instance of prosecuting corruption in sports in Sri Lanka since the act’s introduction in 2019.
Despite the allegations, Senanayake vehemently denies them and considers them an attempt to tarnish his reputation and that of his family. He even threatens legal action against these claims.
An anticipatory bail plea in 2021 seeking protection from arrest was rejected by the Colombo Magistrate.
