Awareness prog on drug abuse
SHILLONG, Aug 14: The Seng Samla Mawkhar (SSM) in collaboration with NRE Pageant India Private Ltd will hold an awareness programme on the menace of drugs. The organisation is planning to hold the programme as part of its silver jubilee celebration at Mawkhar community hall on August 19. Speaking to reporters, SSM president Daniel Syngai said that they sensed a need for this awareness programme in the wake of increasing number of drug addiction cases among the youth. “We want to reach out to help those youth who are into drugs. We will be more than happy if our little efforts can make the difference,” Syngai said. Meanwhile, NRE Pageant India Private Limited president, Ransom Sutnga, said that they are happy to join hands with the SSM in this initiative. “Our effort is not restricted only to create awareness in the society about this problem. We will also try to come out of this addiction through treatment from ayurvedic medicines,” Sutnga said. Appeal for road in EJH
JOWAI, Aug 14: The Jaintia National Council (JNC) Sumer Circle submitted a memorandum to Sutnga-Saipung MLA Santa Mary Shylla appealing for construction of a road from Samasi to Pala in the constituency. The organisation, in its memorandum, flagged the bad condition of the current road from Samasi to Pala. The road reportedly lacks an appropriate drainage system, which creates water overflow issues during the rainy season and drainage clogging problems throughout the year. The children are facing trouble in going to school, and the elders are wary of tripping over damaged portions of the roads. The JNC Sumer Circle also submitted another memorandum to the MLA on the lopsided development of Elaka Nongkhlieh. Maintaining that in the past decade, Meghalaya has taken a huge leap forward as far as development is concerned, the organisation said that after creation of East Jaintia Hills in 2012, the residents of Elaka Nongkhlieh had high hopes with regard to development in various fields such as health, education and employment. East Jaintia Hills is one of the most resource-rich districts of Meghalaya and accounts for a substantial contribution to the state’s GDP. However, it is sad to state that the district has been sidelined and not given its just share of development by the government, the JNC said.

It expressed concerns over the environmental impact of the plant while pointing out that the plant is located close to Riwiang river. Meanwhile, the DC told the HYC that the district administration had already stopped the ongoing work of the ferro alloy plant since they were unable to provide the documents from the pollution control board.
