Former KHADC chairman passes away

Shillong, Aug 25: Former KHADC chairman, Gilfred Sing Giri has passed away at his residence in Nongrim Hills, on Friday. He was 90.
His funeral service will be held at his residence at 3 pm on Sunday. He will be laid to rest at the Laitumkhrah Presbyterian Cemetery, Lawjynriew.
Giri was born on January 10, 1933. He was a staunch supporter and active member of the ‘Hills State Movement’.
He held public office as the member of the erstwhile United Khasi & Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council and later the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council from 1958 to 1967.
During the session held in February – March 1966, Giri was elected as the chairman of the KHADC and continued in this post till 1967.
In 1970, he was among the luminaries who were chosen as the Member of the Legislative Assembly of the Provisional Government of the Autonomous State of Meghalaya.
As a teacher, Giri was associated with the Mawkhar Christian Evening School since 1954 till it was converted into a morning shift school in 1974. As a journalist he was the editor of a weekly Khasi Newspaper Ka Lympung Ri Lum published only on Saturdays during the year 1956-57.
Giri was a member of the erstwhile India Tribal Union and had worked together with other hills leaders.
