SHILLONG, Sep 9: The Voice of the People’s Party (VPP) is currently in a position where it can wax lyrical about the ever-growing list of people wishing to contest the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) elections from the party.
After leaving a mark in the last Assembly elections by winning four seats, the VPP has now set its sight on the KHADC and the JHADC which will soon go to elections.
“We are in the process of selecting the candidates now, and it is going on. There are a lot of people wanting to contest (from the party),” said VPP general secretary Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon.
Asked if the party is dealing with the problem of plenty, he admitted that there are a lot of people offering to represent the VPP in the contest. He, however, said, “…we have our own criteria of selection and I don’t think we will have much of a problem. We will follow the criteria”.
Talking about the district council polls, he said, “We are very positive and optimistic”.
Earlier, the VPP had expressed optimism that the party will soon oust the regional parties in the state and occupy their space in the state.
VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit had even called upon people to throw away all regional parties which have been “hand in glove” with the ruling National People’s Party.
