Guwahati, Sept 11: The Court of Special Judge, Assam on Monday convicted Gangadhar Talukdar, a former lat mandal of Hajo revenue circle in Kamrup district for a bribery offence committed in the year 2016.

Talukdar was sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for three years and also pay a fine of Rs 5,000. In case of default, he has to serve rigorous imprisonment for an additional month under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act 1988.

It may be mentioned that the public servant was caught taking bribe by a team from the directorate of vigilance and anti-corruption, Assam on December 28, 2016 while he was posted as a lat mandal at Hajo revenue circle, Kamrup.

A trap was laid on the basis of a complaint received at the directorate, alleging that Talukdar had demanded Rs 5,000 as bribe from the complainant for processing mutation of land in his name.

Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant had approached the directorate for taking necessary legal action against the public servant.

Notably Talukdar was caught red handed in the presence of independent witnesses immediately after he accepted Rs 5,000 as demanded bribe from the complainant.

The bribe money was recovered from his possession and seized accordingly in the presence of independent witnesses.

A case (ACB PS case number 23/2016) in this regard was registered under Sections 7/13(1)(d)/13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, at the anti-corruption bureau (ACB) police station.
