Subroto Cup: Tripura school beat Mizroam in opener
NEW DELHI, Sep 19: The 62nd Subroto Cup International football tournament kick started with all its grandeur here at the Dr BR Ambedkar Stadium with the group stage matches of the Junior Girls (U 17).Tripura Sports School, Tripura beat Govt Bethlehem Vengthlang Middle School-2, Mizoram 3-1 in the inaugural match of the tournament that commenced after the grand opening ceremony. Shriya Deb scored a double and Marina Jamatia scored the third for the winners. Lallawmzuali scored the consolation for the side from Mizoram. Day 2 of the group stages will see 15 matches played across four venues in as the tournament will be in full flow and promises to provide some exciting action. A total of 32 teams are in fray in the Junior Girls category, which is divided into eight groups, including Bangladesh Krida Shiksha Protishthan (BKSP) of Bangladesh, adding international flavour to the tournament. South Korea hammer India 8-0 in U-17 Asian Cup qualifiers
BANGKOK, Sep 19: It was not the best of times for the India Women’s U17 National Team at the charming Buriram City Stadium on Tuesday as they went down to former champions Korea Republic 0-8 in their opening fixture of the AFC U17 Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers Round 2.But then, it wasn’t the worst of times, either, despite the yawning scoreline. True, Priya PV’s girls found the going tough against the Mighty Koreans, one of the finest teams in the competition. But the few Indian fans present at the stadium could take solace from the fact that the Young Tigresses didn’t go down without a fight.The top two teams from each group in the qualifiers will advance to the Finals. India will next face Iran and Thailand, hoping to overturn this early setback. (IANS)
5 Indian Chess players miss FIDE Jr. Chess C’ships
CHENNAI, Sep 19: In a major setback, five young Indian chess players will miss the FIDE World Junior Chess Championship in Mexico City from September 22 to October 2 due to visa issues.Just days before their scheduled departure, the five players, funded by the government, and two coaches did not get their visas on time.Sources confirmed that they had missed the bus as the squad had left this morning.The affected players are Vrashank Chouhan, Arun Kataria, Bhagyashree Patil, Prraneeth Vuppala and Femil Chelladurai, along with coaches Pravind Thipsay M and Kiran Agrawal.“Despite the best efforts from the Indian government, we could not get the visas arranged,” FIDE advisory board chairman Bharat Singh Chauhan told PTI.“It’s a huge setback for the Indian contingent. It is not good news for the players involved, who will now be missing out on a great international exposure. They were also medal contenders. ”Never in my 45-year-old chess career have I witnessed something like this. Despite having done all the paperwork required, we still missed out on getting the visas cleared and I am still clueless as to why,” he added. However, Chauhan said that the two coaches have been replaced by CRG Krishna (men) and Tarini Goyal (women), who have travelled with the team as they have valid US visas which is acceptable in Mexico.Chauhan had earlier said that the visa issue primarily arose from the Mexican embassy.India has been one of top performers in the event. India was ranked third till 2019 in the all-time medal table, behind top-ranked Russia and second-placed China. (PTI)
