Police to crack down on sale, use of tobacco near schools in WGH

TURA, Sep 20: West Garo Hills Police along with the Health department is set to take strict action against public smoking and tobacco sales within 100 yards of schools, soon.
It may be mentioned that in line with the Cigarettes & Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), officers and personnel of West Garo Hills Police receive comprehensive training from the National Tobacco Control Programme in collaboration with Sambandh Health Foundation along with a pledge to fight tobacco.
The Superintendent of Police, West Garo Hills, Tura has expressed concern about the state’s 8,000 tobacco-related deaths yearly, urging effective COTPA enforcement.
Meanwhile, the SP also assured that ‘No Smoking’ signs will be installed in all conspicuous places and outside each stations in compliance to COTPA Section 4.
