U-19 Boys Cricket: Rain plays spoilsport in both matches

SHILLONG, Sep 22: Both of today’s matches in the Meghalaya Cricket Association’s U-19 Boys Inter District Cricket Tournament were abandoned due to bad weather.Not a single delivery was bowled in Umbuda, Nongpoh, in the Zone 1 Group A fixture between Shillong Cricket Association A and Ri-Bhoi District Cricket Association.In Zone 2, hosts North Garo Hills DCA had reached 90/4 in 14 overs when bad weather intervened.Rituraj had made 24 from 17 and Sillang R Marak 21 from 26 as NGH went at 6.43 runs an over. Silgar M Sangma bagged 2/24, Chengsrang S Marak 1/5 and Salchang Sangma 1/19. On Saturday, in Zone 1’s Group A, SCA-B will play East Jaintia Hills DCA while East Garo Hills DCA will face Tura DCA in Zone 2.

 

Indian Greco Roman wrestlers struggle again
BELGRADE, Sep 22: India’s Greco Roman wrestlers continued to struggle at the World Championships with all three in action on Friday losing at early stages in their respective categories here.Ankit Guliya lost his 72kg qualification round 0-4 to Norway’s Haavard Joergensen while Shailesh Rajendra Shelke lost 0-6 to Sweden’s Aleksandar Georgije Stjepanetic in the 97kg competition.In 60kg, Manish edged Romania’s Razvan Arnaut (8-8) before losing 1-6 to Japan’s Fumita Kenichiro.Sajan Bhanwala (82kg), Gurpreet Singh (77kg), Mehar Singh (130kg) have already been eliminated from the competition.On Saturday, three more Indians will be in action with Vikram Krushnath Kurade (63kg), Vinayak Patil (67kg) and Manoj Kumar (87kg) set to compete.So far, only Antim Paghal has managed to win a bronze medal along with Olympic-quota in women’s 53kg category.(PTI)

 

Germany hire Julian Nagelsmann as new coach
BERLIN, Sep 22: Germany hired Julian Nagelsmann to lead the men’s national soccer team on Friday, entrusting the former Bayern Munich coach with doing a better job than the last Bayern Munich coach who tried.The German football federation said Nagelsmann was taking over on a short-term contract through next year’s European Championship. Germany is hosting the tournament.“We have a European Championship in our own country. This is something special, something that only happens every few decades,” Nagelsmann said. “Having a great tournament in a great country is the priority. I’m very keen to take on this challenge. We will be a close-knit bunch next year.” At 36, Nagelsmann is the youngest Germany coach since 34-year-old Otto Nerz was appointed in 1926. (PTI)

 

Anthony Nesty to become the first Black US swimming coach
NEW YORK, Sep 22: Anthony Nesty made more history when he was picked to lead the US men’s swimming team in Paris, where he will become the first Black head coach for the powerhouse American squad at the Olympics.Nesty’s selection was announced by USA Swimming, which also appointed Todd DeSorbo to head the women’s squad next summer.Nesty, the University of Florida coach, works with top American swimmers such as Katie Ledecky, Caeleb Dressel and Bobby Finke.“I’m excited to be the men’s head Olympic coach in Paris,” Nesty said in a statement released by USA Swimming. “Todd and I look forward to coaching these athletes to the best of their abilities in Paris next summer.” Competing for Suriname, Nesty was the first Black male swimmer to win an Olympic gold medal when he upset Matt Biondi at the 1988 Seoul Games. In 2022, Nesty became the first Black coach to lead a US team at the world championships. Nesty and DeSorbo, who coaches at the University of Virginia, will be reprising their roles from the Budapest worlds, where Nesty led the men’s team and DeSorbo headed the women’s group(PTI)

 

Sheffield Utd women’s player Maddy Cusack dies aged 27
SHEFFIELD, Sep 22: Maddy Cusack, a midfielder for the Sheffield United women’s team, has died at the age of 27, the club said Thursday.The team did not disclose any details about Cusack’s death. She was named as United’s vice-captain last month and had just started her sixth season with the team in the second-tier Women’s Championship, making her the longest-serving player in the current squad.“Sheffield United Football Club is devastated to report the sad news of the passing of Maddy Cusack,” the club said. “Maddy, a women’s team player since 2019 and marketing executive for the football club, passed away on Wednesday.” Cusack, a former England youth international, signed a contract extension with the club in July.
