SHILLONG, Sep 28: The aroma of books, old and new, has taken over the U Soso Tham Auditorium in Shillong as the week-long book fair unfolds its pages of literary treasures, set to conclude on October 2.
For every book lover present, there’s a shared sentiment: the joy of standing amidst a diverse collection, flipping through pages, an experience unparalleled in the digital age.
“You don’t get that feeling when buying books online, nor does it compare to reading on electronic gadgets,” expressed one visitor, browsing through genres at the Shillong Book Fair.
The fair, now in its second day, has drawn a diverse crowd, spanning genders and generations. While the attendees vary, they all share a common purpose – an unyielding love for books.
Colonel Manjunath, a regular book fair enthusiast, who visited the event with his family, had their hands occupied with bags brimming with books they had hoarded at the fair.
Manjunath emphasised, “In this era of social media, children are drifting away from books. These book fairs expose students to a world of literature they might never encounter otherwise. It instills an appreciation for books and kick-starts the reading journey for the young.”
He continued, “While schools follow a structured curriculum, these book fairs open young minds to broader horizons.”
The book-loving couple has successfully passed on their passion for reading to their daughter, Charvi.
She shared her favorite genre – children’s fiction and animation, and displaying her haul of books by beloved authors that will keep her busy for the months to come.
A group of Shillong College students, Sanaphi Kharajan, Haphishisha Nongsiej, and Pritylin Sohtun, wandering about the fair excitedly echoed the sentiments of many in attendance, emphasizing the need for more such events. These fairs provide students with a platform to immerse themselves in the enchanting world of books and discover the magic within.
