Shillong, Nov 20: In a riveting showdown at First Ground, Polo on Monday, PFR Football Academy emerged triumphant by defeating Mylliem Lum SC 2-0 in the final of the Shillong Sports Association’s Third Division 2023.
The first half of the match remained goalless, setting the stage for an intense second half that witnessed the scoring prowess of PFR. Robi Maring found the back of the net in the 62nd minute, followed by Andy Suting, who secured the second goal in the 70th minute.
PFR Football Academy’s journey to victory was marked by an unbeaten record throughout the tournament.
They clinched three wins and a draw in their Group B matches before dominating in the quarterfinal and semifinal clashes. As a result of their title win, PFR, along with the runner-up Mylliem Lum SC, will be promoted to the Second Division next year.
This achievement holds special significance for PFR, as it marks their second consecutive promotion, having finished as runners-up in the Fourth Division in 2021.
For Mylliem Lum SC, this final proved to be their second defeat of the year. Despite winning three games in Group C with only one loss, they couldn’t replicate their earlier success in the crucial final match. Notably, Mylliem Lum SC showcased their goal-scoring prowess in the quarterfinal and semifinal with two goals each but fell short in today’s decisive encounter.
As the champions, PFR Football Academy received a cheque of Rs 40,000, while Mylliem Lum SC took home Rs 20,000 in recognition of their efforts in the tournament.
