Shillong, November 26: Yangkhullen, a serene Zeme Naga-dominated village in Manipur, stands apart from the ethnic strife that has engulfed the region. Despite its tranquility, the village grapples with the challenge of preserving its rich heritage.
As per IANS, Chief Minister N Biren Singh, during his visit in May 2022, vowed to fulfill the government’s commitment to declare Yangkhullen a heritage village. However, more than a year later, the promises remain unfulfilled.
The Zeme tribe, with a population of 2,500 in this ancient village, has faced delays in the allocation of Rs 3 crore for heritage preservation through the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER). Despite assurances and support pledges from Biren Singh, tangible progress is yet to be seen.
The village, known for its unique allure, is in dire need of essential facilities such as a police outpost, roads, water supply projects, and an upgraded health center. The Deputy Commissioner (Senapati) has been directed to compile a report on fund utilization, emphasizing the consequences of any misuse.
Chief Hezeteing Zeme, expressing disappointment, reiterated the villagers’ demands for improved infrastructure. The village chief, responsible for settling disputes through traditional practices, faces financial constraints hindering the maintenance of the symbolic traditional house, a repository of Zeme culture and history.
Despite being a tourist attraction, Yangkhullen remains neglected, with only a few developments like guest houses, a mobile tower, and a Zeme museum. The Zeme chief fervently implores the state government to translate promises into action, secure the heritage village designation, and initiate developmental programs for the neglected village.
Preserving their indigenous religion, ‘Paupai Renet,’ remains a priority for some families amidst the growing influence of Christianity. The Zeme chief is determined to uphold the heritage, identity, and cultural legacy passed down by ancestors, appealing for essential measures to uplift Yangkhullen from its current state of neglect.
