SHILLONG, Dec 18: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council has requested the state government to develop a policy for retired teachers that is similar to that of MLAs, who are entitled to pensions even after serving as MLAs for only two years.
HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem told reporters on Monday that even though they devote thirty to forty years of their lives to teaching, many educators do not receive any social security benefits from the government.
Synrem stated that teachers require social security and that the government should take action to implement a policy that would provide social security to teachers who retire from the service after 15 to 20 years.
The Retired Deficit School Teachers’ Association met with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to remind him of their long-standing demand for the pensions of about 2,000 retired deficit teachers in the state. It was following their meeting that HYC made the request. In the meantime, the HYC has also requested that the state government reevaluate  its intentions to introduce NCERT textbooks.
He said, “We feel the government should not make a hasty decision as far as NCERT textbooks are concerned,” adding that students shouldn’t be forced to use NCERT textbooks without first being aware of the potential consequences.
