Guwahati, Dec 21: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Assam has slammed the central government for suspending 143 Opposition MPs from Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha for demanding a statement from the Union home minister over last week’s security breach in Parliament.

In a statement issued here on Thursday, the party criticised the government’s actions and accused them of being a move to silence the voice of democracy.

AAP national supervisor Rajesh Sharma said that never before had so many Opposition MPs been suspended from the floor of the House. “Moreover, it is ominous to take such action to raise a very relevant and legitimate demand,” Sharma said.

AAP Assam state president Bhaben Chowdhury said “the way the bill was passed in Parliament by suspending the Opposition MPs, it seems that there is no democracy in our country now.”
