SHILLONG, March 4: Ahead of the much-anticipated Lok Sabha elections, Meghalaya Police and the CRPF jointly busted a huge consignment of cannabis or ganja weighing around 4750 kg with market value of Rs 20 crore during a naka checking at Lad Umsaw, Ri-Bhoi.
This major haul even drew praise from the Chief Minister.
Intensive naka checking was carried out done by joint team of Ri-Bhoi DEF and E/67 Battalion of the CRPF on Sunday night after receiving credible information a truck (NL 01-AH-5853) was suspected of carrying contraband.
A total of 280 packets of ganja were recovered after searching the truck. The suspect was identified as Babulal Sheikh.
Preliminary test of the suspected contraband was conducted which showed positive result for ganja (marijuana). In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Chief Minister Conrad Sangma extolled the police force, particularly the Ri-Bhoi police.
“Delighted to share the phenomenal job by Ri-Bhoi Police. They’ve unearthed a hidden stash – a whopping 4750 kgs of pure grade marijuana, worth a staggering Rs 20 crore from a truck yesterday night. This goes without saying that this huge bust has prevented a tidal wave of harm, protecting countless lives and communities from the destructive grip of drugs… But the fight isn’t over. Let’s join hands, report any suspicious activity, and make Meghalaya a safer, healthier state for all (sic),” the post read.
