SHILLONG, Sep 27: Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma has identified infrastructure as the biggest challenge in implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in Meghalaya.
Shedding light on the issue, Sangma explained that many colleges in Meghalaya are struggling with the need for additional classrooms and qualified faculty to accommodate the transition from the three-year to the four-year degree course, which also includes the addition of four to eight new subjects.
Pointing out that the NEP 2020’s multidisciplinary approach will further strain the existing infrastructure, especially when students reach their sixth semester in the coming years, the education minister said, “There is no way out of NEP, but to accept it.”
The education minister then went on to say that the state government is doing its best to assist colleges in adapting to these challenges.
He mentioned that financial aid of Rs 5 crore each has been provided to three colleges—Baghmara, Williamnagar, and St Edmund’s College—to improve their infrastructure.
The government, Sangma said, will continue offering support wherever possible to ensure a smooth implementation of NEP 2020.
