Shillong, Nov 7: The All Meghalaya Karate-Do Association (AMKA) began its annual 30th State Karate Championship at the JN Indoor Stadium, Polo, here on Thursday.
The three-day event, supported by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, was formally opened by the Deputy Chief Executive Member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Shri Pynshngain N Syiem, in the presence of the General Secretary of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association, Shri Finely L Pariat and MSOA Joint Secretary P Laloo.
This year there are 456 karatekas taking part in the kumite (sparring) and kata (demonstration of form) events from 6 years old to the senior level. Karatekas from here will be selected to represent the state at national events and the upcoming Meghalaya Games.
AMKA is one of the most active sports associations in Meghalaya, hosting this championship as well as a separate tournament for schools and colleges on an annual basis, which regularly bring together hundreds of karatekas from around the state. AMKA has also consistently brought honour to Meghalaya with its athletes winning gold medals at regional, national and international events. These feats were recognised by both Syiem and Pariat in their respective speeches. “AMKA has contributed a lot through karate and this championship is a platform and an opportunity for all young boys and girls to show their skill and competency in the field of karate as well as bring joy to all those witnessing it,” Syiem, the chief guest, said.
He also appreciated the support given to the association by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs and said that the KHADC would also extend whatever possible help and contribution as well. Pariat, meanwhile, said that he is always happy to attend AMKA events as it is “one of the best state associations” in terms of discipline and activity.
The commencement of the 30th State Karate Championship underscores AMKA’s unwavering commitment to fostering martial arts in Meghalaya. This annual event not only showcases the remarkable talent of over 450 karatekas but also serves as a crucial stepping stone for athletes vying for national and international recognition.
