MAWKYRWAT, Nov 13: South West Khasi Hills on Wednesday observed the International Day for Older Persons at an event held in Rangthong village, celebrating the district’s senior citizens, recognising them as valued, peace-loving members of the community.
Organised by the District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO) of South West Khasi Hills, in partnership with the District SANKALP HUB for Empowerment of Women, the event was held under the theme of “Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide,” and it was attended by Mawkyrwat MLA and Social Welfare department Advisor, Renikton L Tongkhar, as chief guest.
In his address, Tongkhar emphasised the importance of maintaining good health as one ages and encouraged seniors to make use of health services available at district health centers.
He also urged the elderly to embrace life fully, participating in enjoyable activities with peers, social gatherings, and light physical games. Tongkhar extended heartfelt wishes for a joyful, healthy, and fulfilling life for all seniors, marked by happiness and contentment.
The MLA later presented mementoes and gifts to two of the district’s oldest residents — Rosina Syiemlieh, aged 90, from Photjaud-Rangthong; and Biolis Thongni, aged 90, from Thiepdiengngan village. Gifts were also distributed to other elderly attendees of the program.
Meanwhile, DSWO of South West Khasi Hills, E Tariang, noted that senior citizens have long been the backbone of society, having played crucial roles in fostering the growth and prosperity of younger generations. He commended them for educating families and guiding the community’s youth.
Tariang also emphasised that the International Day for Older Persons is not only a day of celebration but also a time to extend support through initiatives such as CM-CARE programme, which provides financial aid to senior citizens over 60 who are below the poverty line. He highlighted efforts to ensure accessible and affordable healthcare tailored to elderly needs, aiming to promote respect, inclusion, and freedom from age-based discrimination.
Among those who spoke at the event include Medical Health Officer of Rangthong PHC, Dr D Iawphniaw, and Gender Specialist of DHEW, South West Khasi Hills, Valdony E Mawlot.
