Mid-air collision kills six military personnel
Ankara, Dec 9: Two Turkish military helicopters collided in midair on Monday, causing one of them to crash and killing six military personnel on board, officials said. The second helicopter landed safely. Five of the victims died at the site of the accident while a sixth died of his injuries at a hospital, the defense ministry said. The crash occurred in the southwestern province of Isparta during regular training flights, according to the region’s governor, Abdullah Erin. (AP)
2 killed in explosion at fuel depot in Italy
Milan, Dec 9: A fuel depot exploded in the central Italian region of Tuscan on Monday, killing at least two people and injuring nine, authorities said. Italy’s ENI oil company said the cause of the explosion at the depot in Calenzano, near Florence, was under investigation. It said the flames were confined to a loading area and had not spread to nearby tanks. Firefighters were at work battling the flames. Regional train service was interrupted due to the smoke, and people in the area were advised to stay indoors. (AP)
Two terrorists gunned down in Pakistan
Peshawar, Dec 9: Pakistan’s Counter Terrorism Police on Monday killed two suspected terrorists in an encounter in the northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Police cornered the two motorcycle-borne men near a hotel in Shamdi Kalle, close to Lali Khel village in Bannu district The men abandoned the motorcycle and fled on foot, taking refuge in a house in Mandio area. In a subsequent exchange of gunfire, the two suspected terrorists were killed, police said. (PTI)
British Indian elected prez of Cambridge Union
London, Dec 9: A British Indian student has been elected president of the University of Cambridge’s historic Cambridge Union Society, among the world’s oldest debating societies which prides itself as a defender of free speech since 1815. Anoushka Kale won 126 votes to be elected uncontested for the next Easter 2025 term in an election held recently. (PTI)
