SHILLONG, Jan 13: Congress candidate from Nartiang constituency, Katbanbiang Lamare, will file an FIR against a relative of the VPP candidate, Yowanmi Mariaw, for allegedly threatening him and his family in light of Lamare securing a Congress ticket to contest the upcoming JHADC polls, scheduled for Ferbruary 21.
Lamare accused Donbok Mariaw, the uncle of VPP candidate Yowanmi Mariaw, of issuing threats. Speaking on Monday, Lamare said, “The uncle of the VPP candidate came to my house and threatened my mother after I revealed to the media that he had earlier threatened me over the phone.”
Lamare claimed the threats began after he secured a Congress ticket to contest the upcoming JHADC elections. “I was threatened with dire consequences simply because I decided to contest the elections,” he said.
He emphasised his right to stand for election, saying, “I am here to serve the people. I am not afraid and will move forward with my campaign.”
Lamare further alleged that the threats were a sign of desperation on the part of the VPP, accusing them of using both money and muscle power to influence the election.
The Congress candidate also revealed plans to file a formal complaint with the Deputy Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills. He stated that the decision to file the FIR and the complaint was made after consulting his family and relatives.
