SHILLONG, 15: Several political parties have signalled an internal discord and a loss of faith within their parties, NPP Supremo and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said on Saturday, while pointing out that several sitting MLAs from other political parties had begun criticising their own leadership.
In view of this, Sangma expressed confidence that the NPP will lead the executive committees in both the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC).
Speaking at an election rally in Jirang constituency in support of party candidate Sosthenes Sohtun for the upcoming KHADC elections, Sangma asserted that the NPP was poised to retain power in both councils. “Many MLAs are openly criticizing their own parties. This is a clear indication that they have accepted defeat. In several areas, they are even urging people to vote for the NPP,” he remarked.
The chief minister emphasised the vital role of the district councils in safeguarding tribal interests through dialogue and consultation and expressed confidence in the party’s growing influence in Ri-Bhoi district.
“The NPP wave is strong across all five constituencies of Ri-Bhoi. The people have placed their faith in our leadership, and we are confident that the council election results will be in our favor,” he added.
Seeking support for Sohtun, Sangma stressed the importance of the upcoming elections, describing them as crucial for the state’s political landscape. He accused rival parties of attempting to sow communal discord for political gain.
“Many parties are trying to divide our people through communal politics. The NPP stands for secularism and inclusive development. We must unite and vote for the NPP to send a strong message to those spreading hatred and mistrust,” he said.
He urged voters to consider Meghalaya’s legacy as a peaceful state and to think about the future while casting their votes.
“We must come together to ensure that Meghalaya remains united and progresses under strong leadership,” he added.
Praising Sohtun’s contributions as an MLA, Sangma highlighted his developmental work in the constituency over the past seven years.
“Sohtun has played a crucial role in bringing development to this region.
Electing him as MDC will allow him to continue working with the government to strengthen the district council,” he stated.
He further commended Sohtun’s commitment to addressing key issues, particularly those concerning border disputes and law and order.
“He has always stood up for the people and will continue to do so by ensuring government intervention when needed,” Sangma affirmed.
