Prog encourages millet cultivation
SHILLONG, March 19: Farmers from Ri Bhoi attended a festival cum awareness programme on millet production and its benefits at Umwang Them village, on Tuesday. The programme was organized by KVK Ribhoi as part of the Krishi Swarna Samriddhi week. About 60 farmers and the headmen of Umwang Them and Purduwa benefitted from the event which aimed to motivate them to enhance their income and improve livelihood. The exhibition showcased different varieties of millet like finger millet, foxtail millet and pearl millet and processed millet products like porridge, pitha, idli, samosa, steam snacks items and kheer were displayed during the exhibition. During the event, the farmers interacted with scientists who highlighted the benefits of cultivating and consumption of millet for better health benefits. The resource persons highlighted the importance of growing different varieties of millet and the need to incorporate its consumption into the daily diet.
Book donation camp for jail inmates
JOWAI, March 19: A community-driven book donation campaign, an initiative to provide jail inmates with opportunities for self-improvement, education, and rehabilitation through access to books was organised by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), West Jaintia Hills recently. A wide array of educational materials was delivered to the incarcerated population. The initiative began through a campaign launched in December 2024 to provide inmates with resources that promote personal reflection, educational achievement, and the development of skills through books. The donated collection includes a diverse range of materials, such as spiritual, fiction, self-help, educational and training guides, etc designed to foster both personal growth and educational advancement. The campaign received a positive response from the residents and students who contributed to the effort to enrich the prison’s library. The book donation drive was launched in response to the DLSA’s ongoing commitment to improving the living conditions and rehabilitation programmes available to prisoners. By facilitating access to books, the authority hopes to support inmates in their journey toward personal development and successful reintegration into society.
Musical show at Smit
SHILLONG, March 19: Smit witnessed a musical show titled “Ki Sur Na Shlem” hosted by the Shlem Institute of Music, in collaboration with the Arts and Culture department recently. The event provided a platform for young musicians from the institute to showcase their talents. Additionally, the institute aimed to promote and highlight Khasi traditional instruments as part of its efforts to preserve and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Khasi tribe. The audience enjoyed the songs and mesmerising music written and composed by these budding musicians. Among the dignitaries present at the event were Syiem of Hima Khyrim, Balajied Sing Syiem, and Nongkrem VPP MDC, Kitborlang Syiem, among others.
EFLU to celebrate 50th anniv
SHILLONG, March 19: The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Shillong, is set to commemorate 50 years of its establishment with a one-day event on Thursday. The celebration will be graced by Justice IP Mukerji, Chief Justice of the High Court, as the chief guest, while Education Minister Rakkam Sangma will attend as the distinguished guest. The newly appointed Vice-Chancellor, Nagalapalli Naga Raju, will preside over the programme. The EFLU Shillong campus was established in 1973, wherein its Hyderabad counterpart was established in 1958. The university holds a unique position in South Asia, being the only institution dedicated exclusively to the study of English and 10 foreign languages. Over the decades, it has played a pivotal role in promoting linguistic and literary studies, making significant contributions to language education and research.
Unclaimed body
Shillong, March 19: An unclaimed male body of Shering Tamang, (34) has been lying at the Shillong Civil Hospital morgue since March 18, a notification from the Additional Director of Health Services, Civil Hospital here informed on Wednesday. According to the notification, the deceased was admitted to the hospital on March 17 at 10:06 a.m. and passed away the next day at 9:16 a.m. All concerned relatives are requested to collect the body from the morgue within three days, after which it shall be sent for disposal by the SMB.
