MLCU fest celebrates oral traditions of Northeast
SHILLONG, March 27: Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) hosted ‘Talawiar: A Narrative Festival’, celebrating the rich oral traditions of Northeast India. Organized by the School of Languages and Cultural Communication (SLCC), the event brought together storytellers, musicians, and cultural enthusiasts for a day of immersive storytelling and artistic performances at All Saints Hall. The festival began with an invocation by SLCC students, featuring traditional Northeast chants that set a soulful and evocative tone for the day. A key highlight of the event was the Reader’s Theatre performance by Damenshan Goverson Hynniewta, which seamlessly blended music and narrative, captivating the audience with its theatrical storytelling. The storytelling session showcased Northeast India’s diverse folklore traditions, with stories narrated in multiple languages and dialects. Storytellers from various backgrounds shared folktales in an intimate setting designed to resemble the warmth of a home hearth, creating a deeply engaging experience for the audience. The festival also featured a multisensory storytelling performance by Careen J Langstieh, offering a visually and emotionally rich narrative experience. Adding to the artistic celebration, Desmond Rimaki Sunn’s Stories in Song beautifully merged music with storytelling, demonstrating the power of melodies in conveying meaningful narratives.
