Meghalaya climbers shine in mountaineering courses

Shillong, May 2: Meghalaya’s Balawanhabor Rynjah and Keliostar Pdai will be awarded Grade “A” – the highest grade – for their fantastic performance during mountaineering courses held at Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), Darjeeling, Meghalaya Sport Climbing & Mountaineering Association (MeSCMA), announced on Friday.
The training course was held from April 1-28, and was sponsored by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya.
Rynjah, from Sankardev College, won 1st Position in the Sport climbing Competition and as a part of height gaining training he and the team of 65 trainees from Advance Mountaineering Course reached Camp I of Mt Kabru Dome.
On the other hand, Pdai, a constable of 3rd MLP Battalion along with 71 trainees climbed Mt. Renok (16,500Ft) during the Basic Mountaineering Course.
The rigorous and transformative courses equipped trainees with essential skills in mountaineering, including physical training, Yoga, rock climbing, ice climbing, jumar climbing, trekking, ice craft, crevasse rescue, map reading, rope techniques and rappelling. This comprehensive training was designed to prepare participants for the challenges of high altitude, the MeSCMA said in a press release.
