SHILLONG, May 8: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday announced that the new Secretariat building at Umsawli is scheduled for completion by mid-2027, during an inspection of the construction site of the much-anticipated administrative complex in New Shillong Township.
Accompanied by officials from the Planning and Urban Affairs Department, the chief minister reviewed the progress of the Rs 1,188-crore project, which is currently underway in full swing. The foundation stone for the Secretariat was laid on January 21, 2025.
“The excavation and foundation work is going on at a fast pace. Happy with the progress and expect the work to be completed on time, and we are expecting mid-2027 for the project to be completed,” Sangma said during the site visit.
“This iconic building will lay the foundation for an active administration, and its design has been thoughtfully conceptualised to integrate sustainability and cultural elements with modern architecture. Eagerly look forward to its completion,” he added.
Sangma noted that once completed, the Secretariat would serve as the core of a planned administrative city while significantly helping to decongest Shillong.
“This is not only an administrative city, it will also lead to a large level of decongestion within the existing Shillong city because once administration moves out, a lot of space will be opened, a lot of traffic will be diverted, and we will see a large amount of decongestion taking place in Shillong city itself,” he said.
Highlighting ongoing developments in New Shillong Township, the chief minister pointed out that several internal roads have already been completed, with others at various stages of construction.
“At the same time, we are constructing multiple roads that will lead to New Shillong and the new Secretariat. Few are completed, some under process, and hence we will have good connectivity from the existing Shillong city to the administrative city,” he said.
He said these roads are expected to serve as key connectors between upcoming government infrastructures and will enhance overall connectivity to Shillong.
“We have reviewed the whole work and we are satisfied with the speed of the work and expect the project to be completed on time,” he added.
