SHILLONG, June 24: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday stressed on the importance of emotional intelligence, patience, and a people-centric approach in public service while addressing the valedictory programme of the induction training programme for the MCS Batch of 2025.
The chief minister urged the newly inducted officers to serve with purpose and humility, always prioritising the needs of the people.
“Public service calls for utmost responsibility. In our endeavour to accomplish tasks and targets, we must remember that the core of our approach must be ‘people first’,” he said.
Underscoring the importance of emotional intelligence, the chief minister noted, “Emotional intelligence is very crucial in this job. You have to know how to handle situations.”
He advised the officers to be patient and to genuinely listen to the concerns of the public, emphasizing that consultation before decision-making is vital. “90% of the time, I have seen problems arise because we go ahead without consulting people,” he said. “It is imperative that before making a decision, we take time to talk things through and sort them out.”
He reiterated that collaboration and consultation are essential for effective governance.
“Work with purpose and humility to serve society. Prioritize emotional intelligence and adopt a people-centric approach. Be patient and always willing to listen to the concerns of the people,” the CM emphasised.
