Shillong, July 22: In a bid to promote arm wrestling as a recognised and accessible sport among the youth of Meghalaya, the Cheristerfield Thangkiew Memorial Arm Fight is scheduled to be held on August 13, 2025, at the Mawlai Mawroh Community Hall.
Organised by the Hynniew Trep National Youth Front (HNYF) in collaboration with the Meghalaya Arm Wrestling Association (MAWA), the open championship invites participants from all eleven districts, gym enthusiasts, and interested individuals across the state.
The championship will feature a total of 16 competitive weight categories—seven for men and nine for women. The men’s divisions include: under 50 kg, under 55 kg, under 60 kg, under 65 kg, under 70 kg, under 75 kg, and above 75 kg.
The women’s categories are: under 45 kg, under 50 kg, under 55 kg, under 60 kg, under 65 kg, under 70 kg, under 75 kg, under 80 kg, and above 80 kg.Weigh-in for all participants will take place a day prior to the event, on August 12, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Madan Malki.
The main competition will begin at 9:30 AM on August 13.
The last date for registration is August 9, and the entry fee has been fixed at ₹100. Winners in each category will be awarded cash prizes.
The organisers have stated that this initiative comes in with the closure of National Games 2027, and is part of their continued effort to create fresh opportunities for emerging athletes in non-mainstream sports.
The event aims to identify, support, and showcase talented youth—particularly from underrepresented areas—by providing them with competitive exposure and the right kind of encouragement.
HNYF, through its partnerships and local-level engagements, plans to conduct focused training camps and tournaments to help nurture the next generation of arm wrestling champions from the region.
