Congress suffers major setback in North GH
SHILLONG: In a setback for the Congress in North Garo Hills, former Minister Frankenstein W Momin and eight other party functionaries quit their respective posts on Saturday blaming Chief Minister Mukul Sangma
Momin, a former Congress legislator, who unsuccessfully contested from Mendipathar in 2013 Assembly polls, was adviser, District Congress Committee, North Garo Hills.
The nine active members of the Congress from North Garo Hills districs submitted resignation letter to the President, District Congress Committee, North Garo Hills and also to the state leaders.
When contacted over phone, Momin, a critic of the Chief Minister, said that the main concern of the party functionaries is lack of consultations on the part of Chief Minister on various matters related to the party in the district.
“It appears that there is only Mukul Congress and not Meghalaya Congress in the State”, Momin said
Momin, who is yet to give up the primary membership of the party, said he will take a final decision whether to quit the party once and for all.
General Secretary, District Congress Committee, North Garo Hills Sengnab Momin, in a statement said that the office bearers are not happy with the functioning of the party
“We had voiced our various concerns in party forums but in vain”, he said.
According to the general secretary of the party, there is no transparency on the part of the Congress leaders on various decisions on crucial matters.
“The grassroot level decisions are never accepted at the higher level. It is in fact, like one-man show or decision. In other words, we as party workers and members could never make fruitful decisions for the good of the party, but the decisions are always imposed on us undemocratically “, he said.
Others who quit the post included Smith K Marak, General Secretary, District Congress Committee, Chremline K Sangma, President, District Mahila Congress, Lakitha D Shira, Vice President, District Mahila Congress, Minubel K Marak, District Mahila Congress, Sachin Arengh, Organising Secretary, Mendipathar Block Congress Committee, Sengprang Sangma, Vice President, Mendipathar Youth Congress, and Pobonjon Sangma, Executive Member, Mendipathar Block Congress Committee.
Though the sudden reason for the resignation of party leaders of the district is not known, sources said that they were annoyed over Congress giving ticket to the wife of NCP legislator Marthon Sangma from Mendipathar to contest the GHADC polls.
Moreover, sources also added that Marthon is also making efforts to get in touch with Congress to get the support of the party in the 2018 Assembly polls.
