TURA: A village headman in North Garo Hills has filed a police complaint against the Village Employment Council (VEC) for failing to pay dues worth over Rs 6 lakh to 153 villagers who had undertaken work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) this week.
The headman of Badaka village in Kharkutta, B Marak, had filed an FIR accusing VEC leaders Kripson Marak and Willing Sangma of failing to pay daily wages to 153 villagers for MGNREGA works that included the construction of a footpath in their village.
According to the FIR registered, 92 villagers were not paid daily wages for 23 days worth of labour while another 61 villagers were denied their dues for 24 days.
The irked villagers had earlier complained and protested against the VEC secretary who refused to pay the amount.
This prompted the village headman to file the police complaint.
