SHILLONG, Feb 20: The Catholic Association of Shillong and North East Slow Food and Agrobiodiversity Society (NESFAS) have condoled the demise of Professor AK Nongkynrih, who breathed his last on Saturday.
In a statement on Saturday, the Catholic Association recalled Nongkynrih’s association with social and church-based organisations.
“He was a youth icon and a social communicator who travelled the length and breadth of the Khasi and Jaintia Hills in order to give hope to the youths and to spread the message of social equality and development,” the Catholic Association said.
The NESFAS, on the other hand, recalled Nongkynrih’s aim of defending the local food systems in Meghalaya.
It added that Nongkynrih had guided the members of NESFAS through all times.
“Mr Nongkynrih, also a founding member of NESFAS, played a big role in advocating the works and beliefs of the organisation. He was very instrumental and continued to help us through all times. He was a man of great intellect and vision, who contributed immensely to preserve traditional knowledge, indigenous food systems and also advocated the role of women participation,” NESFAS said.
