7 held for assaulting Hek supporter

 SHILLONG: In the first reported case of violence in the run up to the Assembly elections, seven persons have been arrested for allegedly assaulting a supporter of Congress candidate from Pynthorumkhrah constituency AL Hek.

According to police, a supporter of Hek identified as Centenial Son Rumnong was assaulted near St. Nanak School, Pynthorumkhrah on Sunday at around 8.45pm allegedly by supporters of the Independent candidate of the same constituency PT Sawkmie.

The arrested persons have been identified as Sunny Basaiawmoit, Pynshailang Swer, Bahunlang Khongsngi, Phakos Kharshong, Donald Khongsngi, Donald Syiemlieh and Rockyland Swer.

When contacted, Sawkmie refuted such accusations saying some vested interests wanted to malign his name.

Hek could not be contacted despite several attempts.
