SHILLONG, Dec 24: BJP legislator from Pynthorumkhah Alexander Laloo Hek has questioned the source of National People’s Party’s (NPP) source of income in regard with allegedly offering hefty sums of money to political leaders to join the NPP.
Speaking to media persons here on Saturday, Hek accused NPP of playing ‘money politics’ in Meghalaya.
He raised questions on how a national party can emerge from a small and revenue deficit state like Meghalaya.
Recalling that the state government is facing difficulty in paying salaries to government workers, he asked how the NPP can purportedly spend crores of rupees on elections.
Claiming that a minimum of Rs 100 crore is required for a party to contest elections in Meghalaya, he said around Rs 1,000 crore is required to contest elections in other Northeastern states.
“We want to know from which state the money is coming for the NPP candidates,” he said.
Pointing out that the state government has taken multiple loans, the senior BJP leader asked the NPP not to misuse the government machinery in the name of FOCUS scheme.
“This amount under FOCUS is coming as loan and who will be responsible when we will be in huge debt tomorrow? Meghalaya cannot bear the pressure of loan for few people who are enjoying Focus scheme,” he said.
