MAWKYRWAT, Jan 24: After defecting to the UDP, former PHE Minister and MLA, Renikton L Tongkhar has said that the aspirations of the ‘Jaitbynriew’, especially the youths, can be fulfilled only if the UDP leads the government after the 2023 Assembly elections.
It may be noted that Tongkhar had resigned from the HSPDP and joined the UDP and is now their candidate from Mawkyrwat for the February 27 polls.
Tongkhar, who was welcomed into the party by the UDP Mawkyrwat Circle on Tuesday, said his decision to leave the HSPDP, the oldest regional party, was to strengthen the regional force in the state.
“For decades now we have not seen the government led by the regional party in the state. And it is the wish of many to see a government led by the regional party. We believe that the decision of us 5 MLAs to join the UDP on January 18, 2023, will make it happen. We do not do it in haste. We do it with the responsibility to once again strengthen the regional force in the state so that we can form the government in this election,” Tongkhar said as he urged leaders of the party to share this message with supporters.
“We believe that the people of the state will support this move and we expect that the voters will honour the largest regional party in Meghalaya by voting UDP to power so that we can bring changes in the state. We expect that the wishes of the youth of the state and the wishes of the ‘Jaitbynriew’ can be fulfilled only if we get a chance to lead the government,” Tongkhar said.
The UDP candidate from Mawkyrwat called upon party leaders in the constituency to remain united and maintain rapport between them to ensure win in the upcoming Assembly elections.
