Shillong, October 9: The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to reveal the timetable for the imminent assembly elections in five states – Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Telangana.

The ECI has organized a press conference at noon today to disclose the polling dates, the number of phases, and the dates for filing and withdrawing nominations, according to reports from news agency PTI.

The legislative assemblies in these five states are nearing the end of their terms, with expiration dates falling between December 2023 and January 2024. Typically, the ECI announces the election schedule six to eight weeks prior to the legislative assembly’s term conclusion.

These upcoming assembly elections will be a crucial test for all major political parties, including the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the primary opposition Congress, and various regional parties.

Congress currently holds power in two of the five states – Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, while the BJP governs Madhya Pradesh. Telangana is led by the KCR-led Bharat Rashtra Samiti, and Mizoram is under the rule of the Mizo National Front (MNF).

As per India Today, according to sources within the EC, polling is likely to take place between the second week of November and the first week of December. Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, and Telangana may conduct single-phase elections, similar to the 2018 elections, while Chhattisgarh is expected to have polling in two phases, as it did in 2018.

The polling dates for these five states may vary, but the vote count is anticipated to occur simultaneously between October 10 and 15, as per insider information.
