Tura, Aug 10: Meghalaya Police swiftly intervened to dispel rumours after old videos from unrelated events were circulated on social media as depicting the current situation on the international border between India and Bangladesh in Meghalaya.
Recently, two disturbing videos began circulating online where one video showed bodies near a water body along the border, while the other depicted people trying to meet through a fenced border.
These videos were misleadingly presented as evidence of current unrest in Bangladesh.
In a statement, the police clarified that the first video, showing bodies near the border, had originated from an incident on the Indo-Myanmar border and not the Meghalaya-Bangladesh border.
The second video, showing people meeting through a fenced border, was identified as footage from the ‘Milan Mela’ event held in 2019, the police said.
Meanwhile, the police appealed to the residents to be vigilant and cautious about sharing such false information and requested them to report any unverified videos to the Police Control Room (PCR) at +918837423053.
They also emphasised the importance of not spreading misinformation that could cause uncalled-for panic.
