City event pays tributes to ‘Adikavi’ on 212th birth anniv

SHILLONG, July 19: Rich tributes were paid to ‘Adikavi’ Bhanu Bhakta Acharya during a programme to commemorate his 212th birth anniversary at Babu Mani Singh Gurung Auditorium, Gorkha Pathshala Higher Secondary School, on Sunday.
The event was attended by Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Dr. BDR Tiwari and Lady Keane College principal AM Shangpliang as the chief guest and guest of honour respectively.
The programme, which drew a large and enthusiastic audience, paid tribute to the enduring literary legacy of the renowned poet.
During the event, speakers highlighted the significance of Bhanu Bhakta Acharya’s contributions to literature and his role as a cultural icon whose work continues to inspire generations.
Bhanubhakta Acharya is widely known for writing Ramayana in poetry form in the Nepali language, which is widely dubbed as the first-ever translation of any Sanskrit literature into the Nepali language. He has also translated many other Sanskrit literary texts into Nepali.
Among his literary works are Kantipuri Nagari, Ek Man Chitta Lagai Chakari Garya, Khwamit Yas Giridhaari Le, Baalaaji Dekhyan, Ma Bhanubhakta, Roj Roj Darshan Paunchhu, Prashnottar Mala, Bhakta Maala and Ram Gita.
The Nepali poet was born on July 13, 1813, and later moved to Varanasi.
Bhanu Bhakta Acharya was honoured with the title ‘Aadikavi’ or first poet of Nepal because he was the first to write poems in the common Nepali language. After him, other writers also started writing literature in the Nepali language.
