Cong man to contest as Independent

Expressing discontentment with the Congress party, Edmund K Sangma said he had recently withdrawn from the primary membership of the party.

Sangma stated that he was the lone applicant for the party ticket for 44-Raksamgre constituency but the party had failed to consider his application.

He said that considering the strength of support in his favour and the popular will and sentiments of the electorates of the constituency, he has decided to contest as an Independent candidate for the Raksamgre seat.

Blow to Nongstoin Congress

Bricksius Marwein, vice president of the Nongstoin Block Congress on Tuesday resigned from his post and joined the UDP along with 200 of his supporters. He was also the chief organizer of eight polling stations under the Nongstoin Block Congress.

Marwein stated that he felt betrayed since the MPCC had awarded to a candidate who was not approved by the Block Congress.

Marwein said he was joining the UDP candidate Nassar Marwein, who he described as his close friend and an able leader.

Trinamool Convenor resigns

Ashahel D Shira, convenor of the Meghalaya Pradesh Trinamool Congress, has resigned from his post along with around 300 of his primary members from 47-Rajabala constituency.

Appeal to public

The District Election Officer, North Garo Hills, W Khyllep, has informed the general public that distribution of cash, liquor or any other item for gratification of the voters amounts to bribery, and both giving and taking bribe is a punishable offence with imprisonment up to one year and payment of fine.

He also informed that flying squads have been formed under each police station within the district to keep watch over distribution of cash, liquor and other items.

He also appealed to the public that anybody carrying cash beyond Rs 50,000 should produce PAN card or relevant document pertaining to source and end use of the cash, to avoid seizure by flying squads.

Election control room

As per Election Commission of India instructions, a control room of the Income Tax Department has been set up in the State capital with a 24×7 call centre facility for receiving complaints or information regarding movement of cash or other items suspected to be used for bribing of voters or illegal use during the elections.

The control room is headed by N Bhutia, Nodal Officer, IT Surveillance, IT Department. The numbers of the control room are: 0364-2590555; 0364-2590551 (Fax).

Poll official for West Khasi Hills

The Sub-Divisional Officer (Elections) Mairang has informed that Manzoor Ahli Ansari, Expenditure Officer for West Khasi Hills District has arrived at Mairang Circuit House and can be contacted at telephone number 03657-293406/230402 and 9630183569.

The District Election Officer, West Jaintia Hills District, has informed that the e-mail id of SN Ojha, Expenditure Officer for the district is [email protected] and will meet the general people from 3 pm everyday in Room No. 16, DC’s Office, Jowai.

Poll related meeting

The Indigenous Biodiversity and Social Welfare Organisation (IBSWO) will hold a public meeting at Nongstoin, West Khasi Hills on February 7 at 11 am to urge upon the voters not to fall prey to any enticement or inducement of money during the election.

Resignation from Congress

The president of the Congress Unit Bishop Falls, Lower Mawprem, on Tuesday submitted his resignation to the President of the Congress party, Shillong West, citing personal reasons.
