Action taken report on HLSC recommendations on teachers’ job scam

SHILLONG: The Opposition on Monday lost the chance of getting the reply related to the action taken report on the recommendations of High Level Scrutiny Committee (HLSC) on scam in the appointment of school teachers as the question related to the matter lapsed.

During the Question Hour, for sixty minutes, the Opposition legislators focused on other matters thereby resulting in the time lapse.

“The Opposition did not have a proper strategy. Otherwise, other Opposition legislators, who had asked questions on less important matters, should have waited for the question on teachers’ scam to come up,” Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Education Prof. RC Laloo said after the Assembly session.

As per the advanced list, the question regarding action on the recommendations of HLSC was raised by Paul Lyngdoh (UDP).

The Government is tightlipped on the findings of the HLSC report. However, sources said that the Government has initiated steps to take action against those involved in the scam.

Sources added that as per the recommendation the services of more than 300 teachers, who got appointment by way of tampering of their mark sheets by the higher ups, will be terminated, and instead the qualified candidates will be appointed.

The Government is also contemplating action against the Education department officials who were instrumental in tampering the mark sheets of deserving candidates.

Sources also said that though the name of former Education Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh was mentioned in the HLSC report, there was no proof of her involvement in the scam as per the report.

Earlier, Public Information Officer of the Education Department gave a wrong reply to the RTI question of Civil Society Women’s Organization President Agnes Kharshiing on the matter, by saying that the report of HLSC was not with the Education department.
