Itanagar: China, one of the Asian giants, should make a ‘shift’ in its foreign policy to make the world a better place to live in, a former Assam DGP said. “China must shun its policy of aggressive expansionism in order to make a peaceful Asia and obviously, a world of better co-existence,” Former Assam IGP S P Kar said here on Wednesday while delivering a lecture on “Impact of Emerging China on Northeast India.” He slammed the reported Chinese nuclear policy of targeting India and facilitating anti-Indian elements to weaken social fabric. However, the IPS officer at the same time warned the policy-makers in New Delhi against a ‘tit-for-tat’ approach in the face of reported provocations by the Chinese army on the Indo-Tibetan border. He also warned the people of Northeast against the reported “design of China to weaponise the different insurgent groups and Maoists”. Kameng Ringu, senior political analyst and chairman of Peoples’ Party of Arunachal, projected the wretched condition of Arunachal’s border people. He said, “because of lack of infrastructure and pathetic road conditions, they are under-fed and under-educated.” The lecture conducted by the Arunachal Pradesh Charitable Task was attended by various scholars, eminent personalities and political party leaders. Dumper kills 2, Indo-Bhutan international road blocked

Rangia: Two persons were killed and another seriously injured by a speeding dumper truck in Rangia area of lower Assam’s Kamrup district, police said on Thursday. Police said the speeding dumper hit an electric pole at Railway Tiniali and hit the three young men standing by the side of the road Wednesday night. One of the youths, Sadhan Guha, was mowed down and killed on the spot, while the other identified as Anip Das succumbed to his injuries on way to hospital, the sources said. Seriously wounded Samir Das was taken to the Gauhati Medical College Hospital, they said. Angered by the mishap the local people burnt down the dumper and blocked the Indo-Bhutan international road till this morning in protest, the sources said. (PTI)

Man kills cousin over Rs 500

Imphal: A youth allegedly killed his cousin when she refused to pay Rs 500 to buy liquor, but was lynched later by villagers at Moidangpokp in Imphal West district of Manipur, police said on Thursday. N Samananda (25) strangulated his cousin N Chaoba (28) to death when she refused to pay him Rs 500 to purchase liquor on Wednesday. After hearing the news, angry villagers beat up Samananda to death. Two FIRs have been registered. (PTI)

HC notice to Arunachal govt on appt of judicial magistrate

Itanagar: The Gauhati High Court has served a show cause notice to the Arunachal Pradesh government on the appointment of Talo Potom as the state capital’s first class judicial magistrate who also holds the post of chief estate officer. Acting on a writ petition, Justice I Shah of Itanagar bench yesterday issued notice to the state government returnable within three weeks. Techi Hitler filed the petition on November 4 challenging appointment and conferment of power of first class judicial magistrate, chief estate officer and additional district magistrate to Potom. The petitioner has questioned Potom’s appointment saying it was in violation of the Article 234 and 235 of the Constitution, Arunachal Pradesh Judicial Services Rules, 2006, and Section 11 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Teachers to launch hunger strike

Imphal: School teachers of state Education department have decided to launch a fast unto death from November 21 to protest failure of the government to meet the demands of the teachers. Undergraduate, primary teachers who were supposed to be promoted but were not according to the Demand Committee for the Promotion/Upgradation of Undergraduate/Primary Teacher to Graduate (PUUPTGA). T Khogendra, General Secretary of the committee said promotion has been long overdue with most of the teachers supposed to get promotion six to seven years ago. About 600 teachers have been denied promotion by the state Education department he said. All the teachers have decided to start the stir as the government has failed to provide justice to the teachers who have been demoralised by the failure to give them promotion it was added. Meanwhile the State Education Department has decided to conduct DPC for promotion of the teachers on Nov 18 next. (UNI)
