Guwahati:  A group of on-duty media persons were allegedly assaulted by policemen inside Dispur police station in Assam’s main city Guwahati late Friday night.
Media persons, mostly reporters and camerapersons of local television channels, accompanied by a few newspaper reporters and photojournalists had gone to the police station Friday night to collect news. The police official present at the police station at the time said he was not dealing with the case and called over his colleague who was handling it.
However, when the second official arrived, both of them allegedly started verbally abusing the media persons and also assaulted them physically.
The media persons, condemning the alleged incident, on Saturday staged a demonstration in front of the Dispur police station and demanded strict action against the police officials.
Senior superintendent of police AP Tiwari, who inspected the police station’s CCTV footage, later assured media persons that an enquiry would be conducted and if anyone was found guilty , whether policemen or media personnel, action will be taken against them.
Meanwhile, various media organizations, unions and individuals have condemned the alleged assault of reporters and camerapersons inside a police station. (UNI)
