SHILLONG: Residents of Meghalaya can now heave a sigh of relief as the State Government has resumed sale of levy sugar under the Public Distribution System through fair price shops at Rs.13.50 per kg from Monday.
Addressing a function here to mark the resumption of sale of levy sugar, Food and Civil Supply Minister Clement Marak said that Meghalaya would be allotted 1704 metric tonnes of sugar every month to meet its requirement and added that the new concept of sugar distribution would reduce chances of manipulations by unscrupulous elements.
Admitting that consumers were facing lots of hardships due to the high rate of sugar in the open market, Marak said that the process of finalizing the entire concept took some time due to the Lok Sabha elections and other issues.
Earlier, Deputy Commissioner (Supply) Sanjay Goyal said that three kilograms of ISS Grade Sugar 30 would be provided to families every month. Sugar would be provided to people who have ration card in the urban areas whereas the beneficiaries in rural areas have been selected as per the census list of 2011.
It may be mentioned that the ISS Grade Sugar would be distributed in 1 kg packets to the beneficiaries. Supply of PDS sugar in the State was stopped in July 2013 after which the new strategy was worked out for smooth distribution of levy sugar.
