SHILLONG: KHADC CEM Pynshngaiñ N Syiem is out to form an all-party Executive Committee in the Council in the next few days.
“I strongly feel that all the MDCs need to be united at the moment for the cause of the district councils. This is the need of the hour,” Syiem said while talking to newsmen on Wednesday.
When asked about the attempt to dislodge him from the post of the CEM, Syiem asserted that he will retain the post as long as he enjoys the confidence of his fellow MDCs.
“I am not worried about any attempt to dislodge me from the chair. I am holding the post of the CEM by virtue of being the leader of the PDF. I will happily step down if the MDCs repose their faith on a new leader,” Syiem said adding that his main concern at the moment was the issues affecting the people. “I would want the Council to continue to lead the ongoing movement of the people to fight against the suppression of the State Government,” he said.
The move of Syiem for an all party EC in KHADC assumes significance in the context of ongoing power struggle between the Government and the Council.
According to sources, Syiem thinks that he was cornered by his own party men for speaking against the Government on issues of jurisdiction of MUDA building bye laws, empowerment of headmen and the recent Bill restraining MLAs from holding the post of MDCs.
