Ri Bhoi DC seeks people’s support to restore normalcy

SHILLONG: In view of the ongoing tension surrounding the railway project, the Ri Bhoi District Administration called a meeting of eminent citizens and public representatives in Nongpoh on Monday to discuss the current situation in the district and formulate steps to ensure public safety and communal harmony in the area.
The meeting was chaired by the district Deputy Commissioner with Ri Bhoi SP as the co-chairman.
Deputy Commissioner CP Gotmare informed those present about the details of the incidents that have taken place in Ri Bhoi since Saturday and requested their cooperation in ensuring peace and normalcy in the District.
The DC maintained that law should take its own course as far as the violence perpetrated by KSU members is concerned.
The DC also requested the members to suggest future course of action to ensure peace in the district, so that the Silver Jubilee of Ri Bhoi can be celebrated in a befitting manner.
The SP while addressing the meeting maintained that law will take its own course, while exalting the house to take up necessary measures to install confidence in public.
Ronna Khonduit, MDC, Nongpoh, said that in her opinion public safety is of prime importance, and everyone should work towards it. The same emotions were echoed by others present in the meeting.
C B Syiem, secretary of Synjuk ki Rongbah Shnong, with chairman Rocky Marwein, and R. Kylla mentioned that the organisation condemns the violence at Ronghuna in Byrnihat. They also expressed their displeasure over the use of force by the district administration.
They asked about the requirement of NOC from the KHADC for the Railway project to which the DC explained the legal position on  the matter clarifying that NOC was not a requirement as per the Land Acquisition Act, 1894.
Plied Tyrsoh and Bipul Thangkiew, president RBYF expressed their willingness to cooperate with the district administration in ensuring peace and residents’ safety.
The DC thanked all the members present for cooperation.
ADCs and EACs of Ri Bhoi, office bearers of Synjuk ki Rongbah Shnong and RBYF were also present in the meeting.
