SHILLONG: With the delay in holding the Municipal polls even after a court directive, the mover of the PIL, Pawan Sharma has petitioned the Chief Secretary, Y. Tsering, asking the Government to hold the polls.
Sharma in the memorandum submitted to the chief secretary, said that elections to the Shillong Municipal Board have not taken place even after the Supreme Court’s order on the matter.
He also said that the High Court of Meghalaya in its order on April 11, this year, had directed the Government to hold the civic elections expeditiously, but till date no action has been taken in this regard.
In the order, the Court had asked the Government to take efforts to carry out all the necessary processes with utmost expedition and in priority to hold municipal polls in Shillong.
The PIL mover had earlier submitted before the Court that municipal elections were not being held in the State inspite of a Supreme Court order passed way back on December 10, 1999.
The Court said that the State government had been carrying out its responsibilities as regards holding of municipal elections, but the same could only be held in accordance with the constitutional mandate and in that regard, the process of proper modification of the provisions of the Meghalaya Municipal Act, 1973 appears unavoidable.
