EKH milk co-op’s loan hurdle cleared

SHILLONG: East Khasi Hills District Cooperative Milk Union, which runs the processing unit at Mawiong, got a shot in the arm on Wednesday when the Cabinet cleared the path for the union to avail of loans for enhancing production.
The Cabinet approved a proposal to provide block guarantee in favour of the National Cooperative Development Corporation so that the union can get loans under the Megha-LAMP Milk Mission.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said the East Khasi Hills District Cooperative Milk Union, which was set up recently, now produces 10,000 litres per day at the Mawiong unit.
“We would like to enhance production to 50,000 litres of milk per day,” Tynsong said, adding that some central assistance have come and the government, under the Milk Mission, wants to expand production in the district by encouraging farmers to increase their farming activities in respective villages.
The union had asked for financial help through the National Cooperative Development Corporation and the latter had agreed to give Rs 200 crore, of which Rs 150 crore is soft loan and Rs 50 crore subsidy.
