Groups ask govt to solve Harijan Colony issue

SHILLONG: A delegation of 12 pressure groups met Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who is also the chairman of the High Level Committee on rehabilitation of Harijan Colony settlers, to know about the progress in the Iew Them Mawlong issue.
“Three months have passed since June 1. From Day 1, we have been telling the Chief Minister (Conrad Sangma) that the High Level Committee formed to look into the issue of Iew Them Mawlong should not end up like other committees which were formed and then fade into oblivion,” general secretary of HYC Roy Kupar Synrem said.
Synrem reiterated HYC’s demand to relocate the legal settlers that is the employees of Shillong Municipal Board and illegal residents.
“The committee has had over five meetings and work is progressing. He informed us that inventorisation is complete,” the pressure group leader said.
Tynsong told the pressure groups that there are 128 employees working in Shillong Municipal Board who are settling there while there are also employees of other government departments who settle at Iew Them Mawlong.
“He (Tynsong) said 90 per cent of the work is complete. After completion of the remaining task, the HLC will submit its recommendations to the state government,” Synrem said.
Referring to some unsuccessful committees in the past, the organisations urged Tynsong not to delay the issue.
Beside HYC, members of the Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement, East Jaintia National Council, Confederation of Ri Bhoi People, Ri Bhoi Students’ Union, West Khasi Students’ Union, Western Youth Federation, Synjuk ki Seng Samla Shnong, Jaintia Students’ Union, Jaintia Youth Federation, Meghalaya People’s United Front and All Jaintia Students Union attended the meeting.
