SHILLONG: The Agriculture Department is in the process of recruiting 4-5 people for the posts in the Directorate of Food Processing.
The setting up of the directorate was recently approved by the state Cabinet.
“There are issues such as manpower, creating all kinds of infrastructure. It may take another three months before which the impact of this directorate would be felt,” KN Kumar, agriculture production commissioner, said and added that the idea of the directorate is to ensure that marketable surplus is converted into value-added products.
Kumar said people in the state do not have necessary training in food processing which ensures that food is not wasted.
“People are not into processing because they don’t have the skill required which falls in investment of human being. We want to prepare people who will be trained so that food processing becomes a part their value-chain,” he said.
It may be mentioned that CM Conrad Sangma has expressed his keenness to make Meghalaya and even the NE a hub of food processing for the entire world, especially to connect the entire North East and South East Asian and ASEAN nations.
