Umroi MLA flays govt over slow probe into activists’ assault

SHILLONG: Congress MLA George Bankyntiew Lyngdoh on Monday criticised the slow pace of investigation into the assault of social activists Agnes Kharshiing and Amita Sangma last November.
He also brought up the case of RTI activist Poipynhun Majaw who was murdered last year.
Lyngdoh urged the government to speed up the investigations and address the rising crime rate.
HSPDP legislator Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, who was taking part in the debate on governor’s speech, said the state government should abide by the rules if it wishes to resume coal mining.
HSPDP is an ally in the ruling MDA government.
Lyngdoh also spoke about the drug policy, its current status and the delay in implementing the the Megha Health Insurance Scheme IV.
The Umroi MLA pointed out that those who gave land for expansion of the Umroi airport are yet to receive compensation.
Another Congress MLA Mayralborn Syiem flagged the pitiful conditions of lower primary schools.
On issues such as health and medicine, Syiem talked about the lack of ambulances in Ri Bhoi as well as shortage of anti-diabetic drugs.
Congress MLA from Chokpot Lazarus Sangma also expressed concern over ambulance and emergency services in his constituency.
On the road sector, Syiem said there are still a few areas which have no motorable roads and urged the department concerned to look into the matter.
Syiem urged the government to set up women’s hostels in all district headquarters for students who come from rural areas.
Pointing to the governor’s address that mentioned that the state has achieved Open Defecation Free (ODF) status, Syiem asserted that the statement is yet to become a reality.
Meanwhile, People’s Democratic Front MLA Gavin Miguel Mylliem urged the government to look into the delay concerning the payment of salary to SSA teachers.
NPP MLA Dasakhiat Lamare, while speaking about the border disputes, said more effort should be made and a policy should be implemented to ensure the safety of people living in border areas to which Congress MLA from Rambrai-Jyrngam, Kimfa Marbaning suggested the government to set up a police outpost in Langpih and Kyrshai.
He also suggested that salary of teachers should be included in the main budget. UDP MLA from Mookaiaw, Nujorki Sungoh said that special attention should be given to Laskein and urged the government to upgrade Laskein block into a civil sub-division.
